ABOUT THE WILLAMETTE VALLEY
The Willamette Valley, Oregon’s leading wine region, has two-thirds of the state’s wineries and vineyards and is home to more than 500 wineries. It is recognized as one of the premier Pinot noir producing areas in the world.
The Willamette Valley is a huge and varied appellation that includes six sub-appellations: Chehalem Mountains, Dundee Hills, Eola-Amity Hills, McMinnville, Ribbon Ridge and Yamhill-Carlton.
Buffered from Pacific storms on the west by the Coast Range, the valley follows the Willamette River north to south for more than a hundred miles from the Columbia River near Portland to just south of Eugene. To the east, the Cascade Range draws the boundary between the Willamette Valley’s misty, cool climate and the drier, more extreme climate of eastern Oregon.
At its widest point, this long, broad valley spans sixty miles. Overall, the climate boasts a long, gentle growing season – warm summers with cool evenings; bursts of Indian summer into fall; mild winters followed by long springs. In ideal years the maritime climate provides the best conditions possible for growing the cool-climate grape variety for which Oregon is best known: Pinot noir. In lesser years, fall weather can be tricky, causing winemakers to pull their hair. By this measure the Willamette Valley compares favorably with the Burgundy and Alsace regions of France. And, like it or not, the often finicky Willamette Valley climate is the promised land for Pinot noir in America. Wineries also produce Pinot gris, Pinot blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Melon, Gewürztraminer, sparkling wine, Sauvignon Blanc and some Syrah, Cabernet, and Merlot among other lesser-known varieties.
The Willamette Valley wineries are a popular tourist destination, with the area boasting a luxury destination resort, several high-end inns and many delightful bed & breakfasts. The valley also offers a long list of fine dining restaurants. An additional advantage for the wine tourist is the proximity of the wineries to Portland. From Portland, tourists can visit the Willamette Valley winery of their choice in anywhere from 45 minutes to two hours.

Wine and Dime Episode 36 - Financial Planner and Professor Inga Chira
In this episode of Wine and Dime, I have a conversation with Inga Chira. Inga is the owner of Attainable Wealth Financial Planning, located in Los Angeles, and is also a professor at California State University, Northridge. Inga and I chat about what lead her to financial planning, her passion for teaching finance, and some of the trends she is currently seeing in the industry. I think you will enjoy the conversation as much as I did, so pop open a bottle of your favorite wine and enjoy the show!

Before pursuing a Ph.D. in finance, I worked in benefits administration dealing with issues such as setting up medical plans and understanding the tax implications of life insurance. Currently, I teach finance and financial planning, I do financial plans, I answer all kinds of finance related questions, and I manage money. I also do research about what motivates people to save for retirement, how financial planners can help in that quest and the link between money and happiness. Recently, I wrote a fun book about personal finances. You can find it here: Mastering Money – A Simple Guide to Achieving Financial Success
Inga joined the faculty at CSUN in 2015 as an Assistant Professor of Finance and Financial Planning. She has a Ph.D. in Finance from Florida Atlantic University and is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®). Inga's research is mostly concentrated around two fields: corporate finance and financial planning. Her current projects explore the use and perceptions individuals have about the financial planning profession and the drivers that motivate people to save. One of her main goals at CSUN is to increase student interest in the financial planning profession.
Seneca Lake Wine Trail - Polar Passport
Valid daily: December 3, 2018 – March 31, 2019
Time: During each winery’s regular tasting room hours. See list below of participating wineries and their hours.
Price: $30.00 plus sales tax, one passport per person. 16 wineries to visit (4 have limited weekday hours)
Visit the Trail during the best time of year: the off season! The Polar Passport gives residents and visitors alike a convenient and affordable way to enjoy many of the wineries on the Seneca Lake Wine Trail. And while many people enjoy visiting the wineries during the busy summer and autumn season, the winter season is actually the best time to visit when owners, winemakers and vineyard managers are more likely to be in the tasting room.
Passports are an especially great value for regional residents that can readily visit our Trail more than once per season, enabling them to explore the participating wineries across multiple weeks. Normal tasting fees at the wineries ranges from $3-$5 per winery for a standard flight of wine samples. One-time visitors to the region that plan on visiting at least 8 or more wineries will likely also find this product to be a good value. If your plan is to visit fewer than 8 wineries, then it is probably wise to not purchase the passport, and instead pay the incremental tasting fees that are common to most wineries in the region.
Here is how it works: A passport is a simple document that for a set price enables an individual to enjoy a complimentary, standard flight of wines at each of the participating wineries listed in the booklet, one time each. Once you’ve purchased a passport, you can visit any of the participating wineries during their regular business hours, at your leisure. Each winery will stamp the appropriate space in your passport. There are no blackout dates, and they are good during each wineries’ regular business hours; you may visit some wineries one day, come back at a later date and visit a few more!

ABOUT ME
I’m based in sunny Oakland, CA. Before moving to the San Francisco Bay Area, I built my financial planning chops at the Social Security Administration and Vanguard, and I got my MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. In 2012, I started a financial planning residency program at Aspiriant, one of the largest independent wealth management firms in the US. In my four years there, I worked closely with high net worth families, particularly corporate executives who were preparing for retirement and/or needed help with their company stock options and RSUs. I’ve invested many years in my professional training, and I offer this expertise and commitment to you.
I’m a proud aunt, and I’m grateful that my nieces are nearby. As a Chicago native, I’m still giddy about the Cubs’ 2016 World Series victory. My cat, Zoe, is the apple of my eye. Community service is important to me, and I volunteer for Cat Town, a cat rescue group that helps stressed, sick, and senior cats get ready for their forever homes. I also provide pro bono financial planning through the Financial Planning Association. I enjoy Star Wars books and animation as I impatiently wait for the next film. Finally, incorporating mindfulness into my life helps me become a better financial planner, friend, sister, and aunt.
Cat Town
Cat Town was founded by Ann Dunn while she was a volunteer at Oakland Animal Services, Oakland’s municipal shelter. Ann saw the challenges faced by the severely under resourced shelter to adequately care for the number of animals it receives each year, and the specific difficulties cats face in a shelter environment. Ann was quickly joined by other shelter volunteers to create an alternative to the shelter for the cats who are at greatest risk for euthanasia.
Part of what makes Cat Town unique is that several members of our core team are still volunteers at OAS and work closely with the cats there. This helps us identify the cats who most need our help. And, while we are fully independent of OAS, we work in close collaboration with shelter staff and consider supporting that shelter to be integral to our mission.
Cats Adopted by Year from Cat Town
Starting with a foster-based program in 2011, we now have a network of more than 50 foster homes in and around Oakland. We reserve the foster homes for the cats who most need a calm, quiet environment to thrive. Generally these are cats who are more sensitive to change, such as older cats, cats who don’t do well with other cats and/or cats with special needs. Potential adopters meet these cats in their foster home, where they are most relaxed and able to show their true personalities.
In 2014, we launched Cat Town Cafe (now Cat Town Cafe and Adoption Center) in collaboration with Adam Myatt — aka the Cat Man of West Oakland. Today, our adoption center allows us to give cats a place to socialize, learning from other more confident cats how to interact with humans. In our free-roaming space, guests and cats alike can enjoy a relaxed environment and get to know one another without the stress of the shelter, reducing the barriers to the adoption process.
In 2017, we expanded our adoption center and opened The Studios at Cat Town, where Oakland's most difficult to place shelter cats can get dedicated attention from our staff and volunteers, while being afforded greater opportunities for adoption. Visitors to Cat Town can ask to see the expanded space and visit with approved cats.
Cat Town is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation, and all donations are tax-deductible. Our tax ID is 27-3838132.
The Wine and Wineries
Schransberg Sparkling Wines
Schramsberg’s founders, Jack and Jamie Davies were determined to seek out a simpler, more meaningful life. In 1965, after a yearlong search, they discovered a run-down winery on the mountainside above St. Helena. The 19th century Victorian mansion presided over the tangled remains of once stately gardens and underground cellars. The historic Schramsberg property had been abandoned for years, but the Davies were looking for a challenge. On that day they decided Schramsberg would be brought back to life.
The Davies had an ambition to make wine, but not just any wine. They were setting out to produce a world-class sparkling wine, and it was a lofty goal. Later that year, the 1965 Blanc de Blancs came to be, and would be the first commercial use of Chardonnay in American sparkling wine.
Castel Grisch Winery
"Growing Vine by Vine For Over 30 Years". Established in 1983 by a Swiss German couple, Castel Grisch has been devoted to providing the best experience and wine for its visitors. Castel Grisch sets on a gorgeous site with breathtaking views of Seneca Lake. The vineyard at Castel Grisch is home to 40 acres of vines ranging from native varieties, to Vinifera varieties. We utilize the freshest, and best quality grapes to craft our wines, and it truly shows in the quality. Since our founding in 1983, we've striven to produce the most consistent, and best quality wine, vintage to vintage. Our wines are created to appeal to a whole variety of tastes, shaped to your liking. So why drink our wine? Because we make it for you.

Wine and Dime Episode 34 - Welcome to the Team Kerrie Beene
In this Episode of Wine and Dime, I introduce a new member of Irvine Wealth Planning Strategies, Kerrie Beene. We have a nice conversation about career choices, studying for the CFP exam, college planning and of course some of our favorite wines. It was a great conversation and I know you all will love it as much as I did. Welcome to the team Kerrie!!
A little bit about Kerrie Beene…
My own personal financial journey has taught me that while their important, life is more than numbers.
Finding joy in the journey towards personal goals is key.
A smart plan with a lot of heart goes a long way to keeping daily financial decisions in line with your long term goals.
I graduated from Southeastern Oklahoma State University with a degree in Business Administration and hold a certificate in Financial Planning from Wake Forest University. I passed the CFP exam in November of 2016 and I'm currently working towards my service hours.
I began my career in financial planning by starting my own company, Beene Financial Planning. Having the desire to work as a team, I then joined Irvine Wealth Planning Strategies.
My roots in Southeast Oklahoma have given me great insight on the need for financial planning that is not just investment focused, but also on all the other financial planning decisions. I enjoy, and work best, with those who are ready to take control of their finances and use their money to fulfill their goals and dreams.
The Wines and Wineries
Girls Gone Wine
Three girlfriends in Hochatown, Okla., decided that a winery would be a fun gathering place for groups of friends.
They created Girls Gone Wine to be more than just a tasting room—it is a fun boutique winery with a funky, awesome gift shop. Though there is no vineyard, all the wine is fermented and produced on site--their slogan is "Girls Gone Wine...not Girls Gone Farming!"
You can enjoy a complimentary tasting, great shopping, gather with your friends on the patio to enjoy a glass or even make a custom batch of wine to give as gifts to your business clients, as wedding party favors or just for your own cellar.
Twisted Sisters
The pomegranate's earthy, rich juice balances with the slightly spicy, robust zinfandel-like grapes creating a delicate sweetness that has a particular uniqueness on the first sip and leaves you wanting more..
Friends 4 Life
A refreshing, easy-drinking wine. The white merlot style wine is enhanced by ripe strawberries.
Friends 4 Life began while our friend and fellow wine girl, Shawn Hutchings, was battling breast cancer. Shawn assisted in the design of the label. She is the cute one with the on her t-shirt. The SOS on our T-shirts stands for "Sisters of Shawn", which symbolizes our bond as wine sisters forever!
Boundary Breaks Vineyard
About
We are off the main road, so do not expect to find crowds and buses at Boundary Breaks. We focus on the vineyard and on making wines that score 90 points and higher. Located just north of Lodi Point State Park, we offer world-class Rieslings and the best views on Seneca Lake.

The Wines
Chuck’s Pick
Aslina Wines - Chardonnay
A complex fruity chardonnay, creamy and full. Partial wooding gives this wine the edge and to show the beautiful tropical fruit and limy character. Good acidity balancing the fruit and wood.12% of the wine was in barrels for 12 months while the rest was on the lees in the tank.
Amy’s Pick
Belhurst Estate - Pinot Grigio
Pinot Grigio is the Italian name for Pinot Gris, a white mutation of the Pinot family which shares its genetic fingerprint with Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc et al. The term Pinot Grigio has become strongly associated with lighter wines produced in great quantities, particularly in northern Italy.
The refreshing Pinot Grigio style has enjoyed great success in various countries, most recently the United States, (where it is fondly nicknamed "Greej") and Australia. The most common descriptors of the style are "light", "crisp" and "dry". These characteristics are complemented by aroma notes citing lemon, green apple and blossoms.

HOW STUDENT LOAN PLANNER GOT STARTED
I should introduce myself. I’m Travis Hornsby, and I’m the chief student loan planner around here.
I started Student Loan Planner in October 2016 after helping my wife and her friends figure out their six figure student loans.
I used to be a bond trader, so I took my excel heavy skill set and built models for how to save money paying back student debt.
When my wife and I tackled her debt from med school, there were not a lot of resources out there for professionals like her. Most of the sites that did exist just wanted us to refinance so they could earn a commission.
All of our team members either hold the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) or Certified Financial Planner™ (CFP®) designations.
We all have a passion for conquering debt's hold on your life and mental energy.
Belhurst Castle
is a former private residence on the shores of Seneca Lake in Geneva, New York. It was designed by architects Fuller & Wheeler and built between 1885 and 1889. The three-story, nine bay wide Romanesque Revival style mansion is constructed of Medina sandstone. It has a slate gable roof, one-story solarium, and four rectangular stone chimneys. It features projecting porches, bays, towers with conical and pyramidal roofs, eyebrow windows, and a porte cochere with Syrian arch.
Supplemented by modern facilities, Belhurst Castle has been adapted for hotel and retail uses. It holds a hotel with three choices of lodging (Vinifera Inn, Chambers in the Castle, and White Springs Manor); two ballrooms to host weddings, two restaurants (Edgar's Restaurant and Stonecutters); spa, and a winery.
Belhurst Pinot Noir
Intense blueberry and blackberry notes penetrate through this fruity, forward Pinot Noir. Hints of savory herbs add elegance to an otherwise one-dimensional palate that finishes with big, coarse tannins.

Wine and Dime Episode 30 - Saving our Planet one Marine Biologist at a time with Doug Dixon
In this episode of Wine and Dime, I speak with Retired Marine Biologist, avid fisherman, and lover of wine, Doug Dixon. Doug has a PhD in Biology and we spend much of our conversation talking about how he has helped power plants maintain safe environments for wildlife. We also talk about his love for "Big, Bold, Red Wines" and we talk about a few of our favorite vineyards in the finger lakes region. I hope you enjoy my conversation with Doug as much as I did. Enjoy a glass of your favorite wine and enjoy the show!
The Wine, Wineries, and Food
Hosmer Winery
Hosmer Winery is a fully functioning estate winery, everything from planting and growing the grapes, to picking, pressing and bottling is done on site. As a farm, we cultivate 70 acres of grapes with over 14 varieties and growing. Our belief in wine making and grape growing are parallel and continuing and we strive to maintain preservation of the land and the fruit form vine to table. Our passion for what we do is exemplified through the creation of our memorable wines.
McGregor Vineyard
The McGregor family invites you to enjoy a casual, seated tasting of estate wines produced from our half-century-old vineyards. Our winery is hidden on a hillside just one mile above the eastern shore of Keuka Lake.
The Elf in the Oak
Casual atmosphere with an outstanding view from the deck! This hidden gem is quite small, with only a few tables inside, and a few on the deck. Get a table on the deck for an outstanding view. The lunch selections were standard fare with a foodie twist...very tasty! There's an ice cream stand outside as well for those with a sweet tooth and if you have any room left after the big lunch.
