Wine and Dime Episode 29 - 13 and Life to Live with Donald Horack
In this episode of Wine and Dime, I had the pleasure of speaking a very astute 13 year old named Donald Horack. In some ways, Donald isn't your 13 year old kid. While he does enjoy many things a typical 13 year old enjoys, he also has interests that some adults don't have. In this interview, our conversation takes us from the G7 summit to Ronald Reagan, to his favorite Root Beer! (See below for that) I had a great time talking to Donald and I think we can learn a lot about the generation from this young man. Thank you for listening and enjoy the show!

Vigil's Root Beer
Great drinks don’t need fake ingredients. Virgil’s is all-natural. We obsess over the recipe and the process. We don’t use any preservatives, any artificial colors, or any GMO-sourced ingredients. Great taste without the chemicals. Plain and simple. A delicious, handcrafted, all-natural refreshment.

War Horse Brewery
IN 2008...
War Horse Brewing Co. (then called Barley Yards) poured it's first pint. The beer was contract brewed in Rochester with a dream to open an on-site brewing facility in the future. In June of 2016, the dream was realized and our state of the art brewing facility was complete. We have grown and changed a great deal throughout the years. What hasn't changed is our our love of great people, great beer, and great stories.
War Horse Brewing Co. is part of Three Brothers Wineries & Estates. Imagine three unique wineries and a microbrewery all on one estate, overlooking beautiful Seneca Lake and voilà you've got Three Brothers. As a whole, our priority is a superior customer experience and our philosophy unabashedly argues "we've got something for everyone." Try us...we dare you.

The Wine!
Lakewook vineyards History
In 1951, the Stamp family moved to Lakewood Farm, a run-down peach and apple orchard on the west side of Seneca Lake. The next spring, they started planting grapes. The original grapes were those favored by the large wineries and grape juice companies. In the mid-80’s the family diversified to add some new varieties, with the hope of someday using them to make their own wines.
In 1988, Monty and Beverly Stamp and their children pressed the grapes for their first vintage.
A Vision Realized
Lakewood Vineyards Winery opened to the public in June 1989 with 7 varieties of wine, made from estate-grown grapes from their 45 acres of vineyards.
Today, with 80 acres of vineyards and 3 Stamp family generations working together, the winery produces a diverse selection of wines. Their dedicated and talented team prides themselves on offering Finger Lakes wines of exceptional quality and value.
This diamond in the rough opens with aromas of cherry, plum and toast. The palate is soft with youthful tannins finishing warm with hints of stone fruit. Lakewood’s Pinot pairs beautifully with duck, wild game, salmon and other dishes that would ascend when matched with a beautifully crafted Pinot Noir. - Winery

OUR VALUES
Our goal is to be your financial coach, and enable you to focus on healing and finding joy in life again. We take a holistic approach, focusing on helping you navigate financial matters during the hardest times. Our seven values reflect our tailored approach.
The Wineries and Wine
John and Ann Martini moved to Anthony Road in 1973 at the urging of a friend that touted the joys of grape growing in the Finger Lakes. They loaded up 2 young children and left their home in Baltimore, where John worked for WR Grace to set up their farming life on the west side of Seneca Lake. Surprisingly neither Ann nor John had an agricultural background, unless you count John’s youthful summers at his grandparent’s farm in Melvin, Illinois. But together and with the help of family and friends they planted their first 5-acres, Foch, in the summer of 1973. The vineyard grew, to 30-acres, as did the Martini family, to 4 children, but it was quickly realized that an outside job was needed to support their endeavors. John joined the staff at the Cornell’s Experiment Station in Geneva and Ann took over the day to day operations and maintenance of both the household and the vineyard.
Devonian Red
Sedimentary rock formed during the Devonian Period - a chapter of geological history in the Finger Lakes, is the foundation of the soils on which our grapes are grown. Year in and year out, our Devonian Red, a medium-bodied dry red, is quite delicious and a great value!
Caymus Cabernet
A dark, scarlet red color, with powerful aromas of sweet ripe cabernet grapes. Initial impressions are fantastically appealing, brooding to expansive textural sensations of finely grained cacao tannins. The whole of the wine is balanced, rich, expressive and impressively complex. The backbone of fine tannin and sweet ripeness is a carry-over from perfectly mature fruit.

Today, Seneca Lake Wine Trail is the largest and most active wine trail in New York State with a community of over 30 wineries, a distillery, several breweries and hard cider producers and a meadery.
Seneca Lake’s natural combination of deep water, at 632 feet it is the deepest of the Finger Lakes, and sloping hillsides provides the ideal microclimate for grape growing. Since Joe is a big fan of cooking, a fitting metaphor for Joe's work as a financial advisor is that of going to a highly recommended restaurant because the chef uses fresh ingredients and eats what he cooks. Happy Money: The Science of Smarter Spending
by elizabeth Dunn
Two professors combine their fascinating and cutting-edge research in behavioral science to explain how money can buy happiness—if you follow five core principles of smart spending.
Most people recognize that they need professional advice on how to earn, save, and invest their money. When it comes to spending that money, most people just follow their intuitions. But scientific research shows that those intuitions are often wrong.
Happy Money offers a tour of research on the science of spending, explaining how you can get more happiness for your money. Authors Elizabeth Dunn and Michael Norton have outlined five principles—from choosing experiences over stuff to spending money on others—to guide not only individuals looking for financial security, but also companies seeking to create happier employees and provide “happier products” to their customers. Dunn and Norton show how companies from Google to Pepsi to Charmin have put these ideas into action.
Along the way, Dunn and Norton explore fascinating research that reveals that luxury cars often provide no more pleasure than economy models, that commercials can actually enhance the enjoyment of watching television, and that residents of many cities frequently miss out on inexpensive pleasures in their hometowns. By the end of this “lively and engaging book” (Dan Gilbert, author of Stumbling on Happiness), you’ll be asking yourself one simple question every time you reach for your wallet: Am I getting the biggest happiness bang for my buck?

Michele Chiarlo’s extensive vineyards stretch over more than 272 acres of Piedmont, including the hills surrounding Canelli, which offer an ideal microclimate for growing Moscato. Grapes are hand harvested from select vineyards with southern exposure and placed in pneumatic presses, followed by a slow fermentation using natural yeasts to a low level of alcohol. Unfermented Moscato grape must is then added to fine tune the sugar levels. Finally, the wine is immediately bottled in order to preserve the characteristically aromatic, sweet fruit fragrance of the Moscato Bianco grape. The result is a wine with such a delicate finesse that Michele Chiarlo named it Nivole after the Piedmontese word for clouds.

Additional Resources -
CABERNET FRANC
Cabernet Franc, one of the three pillars of the classic Bordeaux blend, has proven itself as a solid producer in the Finger Lakes wine region of New York. A lot of wineries prefer this as their staple red vinifera due to the vines shorter ripening period and cold tolerance. The key to making a fine Cab Franc starts in the vineyard. Pick too early and the wine will have an unsavory green bell pepper characteristic; pick to late and the fruit will be unsound leaving the winemaker rushing to stabilize the wine from spoilage.
Bully Hill makes a downright tasty Cab Franc with the grapes being sourced from Seneca Lake. The current 2013 vintage was fermented in Redwood open top fermenters for maximum tannin and color extraction. Once finished and pressed off, we fill up oak casks down in the cellar to bring this fine wine to fruition. We do small lot production of 500 cases a year and thanks to our happy herd of customers this wine sells out annually!
