The Wines

Nebbiolo Wines - Wines made from Nebbiolo are characterized by their ample amounts of acidity and tannin. Most examples are wines built for aging and some of the highest quality vintages need significant age (at least a decade or more) before they are palatable to many wine drinkers and can continue to improve in the bottle for upward of 30 years. As Nebbiolo ages, the bouquet becomes more complex and appealing with aromas of tar and roses being the two most common notes. Other aromas associated with Nebbiolo include dried fruit, damsons, leather, licorice, mulberries, spice as well dried and fresh herbs. While Barolo & Barbaresco tend to be the heaviest and most in need of aging, wines made in the modernist style are becoming more approachable at a young age. Lighter styles from Carema, Langhe and Gattinara tend to be ready drink within a few years of vintage. Nebbiolo from California and Australia will vary from producer and quality of vineyard.

Mexican Wine - La Santa comes from centenarian, own-rooted Rosa del Peru (Moscatel Negro) vines grown at 2,400 ft elevation on sandy loam and granite soils in Tecate. The grapes were hand-harvested, de-stemmed, and fermented without temperature control in 450 liter concrete tinajas with 45 days of macerationThe wine was then raised for 3 months in ½ stainless steel vats and ½ older barrels. A lively and vertical vin de soif, La Santa is almost rosé colored in the glass, delicately floral, with red and dark fruits and juicy acidity. A lovely red wine to serve chilled with charcuterie and cheeses.

Wine and Dime Special Edition - New York 23rd Candidate, Tracy Mitrano

In this special edition of Wine and Dime, I had the opportunity to speak with New York 23rd district candidate for Congress, Tracy Mitrano.  We talked about financial issues, such as student load debt and medical expenses.  Tracy shared with us her concern about these topics, and her plans to help New Yorkers in the 23rd District.  And this wouldn't be "Wine and Dime" if we didn't talk about or favorite wines and the foods that we like paired with them... so we did that too.

It was a pleasure to speak with Tracy on a variety of topics and get a little insight on a few topics she is passionate about.  As with any election, I like to look at all the candidates and decide who is a right fit for me and my family.  I encourage everybody to take a look at all the candidates and decide on your own.  When people ask me my political affiliation I often respond with, "I'm not a Democrat... I'm not a Republican... I'm an American"

It's about uniting around our common values and making NY-23's rural communities, towns, and cities a great place to live, work and raise a family."

The Wine... In this case, the Wineries

Tracy has incredible knowledge of the local wineries, so much so, that we couldn't possibly list all the wines that were mentioned.  So we'll list the wineries instead and you can go take a look at their selections!

Anthony Road

John and Ann Martini moved to Anthony Road in 1973 at the urging of a friend that touted the joys of grape growing in the Finger Lakes. They loaded up 2 young children and left their home in Baltimore, where John worked for WR Grace to set up their farming life on the west side of Seneca Lake. Surprisingly neither Ann nor John had an agricultural background, unless you count John’s youthful summers at his grandparent’s farm in Melvin, Illinois. But together and with the help of family and friends they planted their first 5-acres, Foch, in the summer of 1973. The vineyard grew, to 30-acres, as did the Martini family, to 4 children, but it was quickly realized that an outside job was needed to support their endeavors. John joined the staff at the Cornell’s Experiment Station in Geneva and Ann took over the day to day operations and maintenance of both the household and the vineyard.

Chianti Classico

pink-chianti-classico-label_2.jpg

What Makes it Chianti?

Chianti Classico is a DOCG wine and shows unique peculiarities and characteristics. Simply said, it is not enough to be produced in within the Chianti region to be called a "Classico". In fact Classico wine has to respect specific rules. Its blend is 80% of Sangiovese, the red grape typical of this area, 20% of other grapes which include native grapes such as Canaiolo and Colorino, as well as other international varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

Its characteristics are a limpid ruby red color, floral notes for its odor and a harmonious, dry and sapid flavor with a good level of tannin. The minimum alcohol level should be 12 degrees.

Wine and Dime Episode 16 - Insurance Expert with Jeff Ryan

Jeff Ryan.jpg

Jeff Ryan

The Ryan Agency

57 Broadway Mall

Hornell, NY 14843

Telephone: 607-324-7500

E-mail: Service@RyanAgency.com

In this episode of Wine and Dime, I pulled an old interview out of the archive.  I sat down with Jeff Ryan of The Ryan Agency, to chat about Insurance and the important roll it plays in our financial lives.  Jeff is the owner of The Ryan Agency located in Hornell NY, with offices also in Jasper and Wellsville, NY.

The Ryan Agency is an Independent Insurance Agency that represents YOU. We don’t offer a product from just one insurance company. Rather we provide insurance programs from many top insurance companies and tailor an insurance package that fits your needs and budget. For Insurance Protection You Can Rely On, it’s The Ryan Agency.

The Wine:

CABERNET FRANC

Cabernet Franc, one of the three pillars of the classic Bordeaux blend, has proven itself as a solid producer in the Finger Lakes wine region of New York.  A lot of wineries prefer this as their staple red vinifera due to the vines shorter ripening period and cold tolerance.  The key to making a fine Cab Franc starts in the vineyard.  Pick too early and the wine will have an unsavory green bell pepper characteristic; pick to late and the fruit will be unsound leaving the winemaker rushing to stabilize the wine from spoilage.

Bully Hill makes a downright tasty Cab Franc with the grapes being sourced from Seneca Lake.  The current 2013 vintage was fermented in Redwood open top fermenters for maximum tannin and color extraction.  Once finished and pressed off, we fill up oak casks down in the cellar to bring this fine wine to fruition.   We do small lot production of 500 cases a year and thanks to our happy herd of customers this wine sells out annually!

You notice the Owl on the label?  This pen and ink was concocted by Walter S. himself, humorously illustrating his inability to use his last name during Bully Hill’s lawsuits with Coca-Cola.  Walter S. Whoooooo, do you know Whooo? I know Whoooo!  This wine truly is a hoot.

The Wine

Frank Family Carneros Chardonnay

https://www.frankfamilyvineyards.com/wine/napa-valley/carneros-chardonnay

16CarnerosChardonnay.jpg

Carneros Chardonnay is barrel fermented in 34% new, 33% once and 33% twice-filled French oak barrels for 9 months. While ageing on the lees, the wine was hand stirred regularly to promote depth and longevity. This wine appears light straw in the glass with aromas of toasted brioche, baking spices, and candied lemon rind. On the palate, the Carneros Chardonnay is full-bodied and creamy yet balanced by its lively acidity; with nuanced flavors of yellow apple, lemon curd, baked pear, melon, and subtle hints of oak toast.

Featuring a flat-fee structure and simply elegant portfolios, First Ascent is an investment firm where clients truly do come first.

What I do here:

I imagine how we can become more useful to the financial advisors and clients we work for and encourage my teammates to do the same.  Then I guide the process of turning those ideas into reality. When I close my door and roll up my sleeves, I am most likely to be working on educational material for our clients or communicating with advisors about what we do, and how and why we do it.

Why I love my job:

After 40 years in the financial services industry, I want to see if I can do things better. I think we can create better portfolios for long-term investors through improvements in the processes and practices commonly used in the construction and management of such portfolios. We can help individuals become more successful investors by increasing their confidence and understanding of investment fundamentals through clear, concise communications. We can offer low fees for high quality investment management services and put a cap on the amount a client pays annually.  If we do all that, we will make a difference in the industry and in the lives of the advisors and clients we work with.

The Wine

In most red Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Grenache noir is the most common variety, although some producers use a higher proportion of Mourvèdre. Grenache produces a sweet juice that can have almost a jam-like consistency when very ripe. Syrah is typically blended to provide color and spice, while Mourvèdre can add elegance and structure to the wine. Some estates produce varietal (100%) Grenache noir, while a few producers insist on using at least a token amount of all thirteen originally permitted varieties in their blend. One of the only estates to grow all these varieties and use them consistently in a blend is Château de Beaucastel

Châteauneuf-du-Pape red wines are often described as earthy with gamy flavors that have hints of tar and leather. The wines are considered tough and tannic in their youth but maintain their rich spiciness as they age. The wines often exhibit aromas of dried herbs common in Provence under the name of garrigue. Châteauneuf-du-Pape dominated by Mourvèdre tend to be higher in tannin and requiring longer cellaring before being approachable.

The Wine:  Miles Wine Cellars

Ghost Wine - Light, semi-dry white wine that’s a blend of 50% Chardonnay 50% Cayuga. Serve with a cheese and cracker tray or a perfect picnic lunch on the lawn.

The Bottle

The couple wanted a unique bottle to package their Ghost blend, so they hired Fred Wickham, of Canasta Designs in Watkins Glen, to dream up a fitting label.

By the time Wickham, Miles and Hayes had agreed on the finer details, they had designed a one-of-a-kind silk-screened bottle that casts an ethereal feel.

The image on the front of the bottle is a ghost-like silhouette of a woman. Through her skirts and the wine is the bottle, one can see a line drawing of the house, which appears on the back of the wine bottle.

Ghost Wine by Miles Wine Cellars

Ghost Wine by Miles Wine Cellars

Two tiny figures – a man and a woman (see illustration at right) – are embracing on the front porch of the house. The couple’s image is repeated on the cork.”They had an idea they wanted to do a ghost bottle and I knew the story,” says Wickham.

One of the theories Miles and Hayes have heard about their ghosts revolves around a young couple who may have died tragically at the house. They haven’t been able to trace the legend to true roots, but were intrigued by the story and the recollections of the elderly woman who told them of her childhood experiences at the house. She never minded being punished when her parents sent her to her room, because she always had the company of a nice man and woman who would come out of the walls and visit.

The back of the bottle includes advice from Hayes, “Experience the spirits within,” as well as an invitation to visit the wine cellar’s web page to read some of the ghost stories or to add your own experience.

Wine and Dime Episode 12 - Common Cents with Jennifer and Laura

In this episode of Wine and Dime, I will be chatting with Jennifer Harper and Laura Coleman from Common Cents Financial Literacy, Inc.

“Common Cents is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has been providing practical financial education since 2005. They typically focus on students aged 16-22, a critical time for developing positive financial habits.

Being able to successfully manage personal finances is a critical skill that affects everyone, regardless of income. Unfortunately, it is rarely taught in an applicable way.

They don’t teach the old ‘if you save x per month at y% for 40 years, you’ll be a millionaire’ kind of classes. While all of that is true, they do our best to make it real.”

You can find Common Cents on the web at http://www.ccfli.org/

The Wines:

Blueberry Cider - From Apple Valley Orchards http://www.applevalleyorchard.com/

Zen of Zin - Zen of Zin was designed with one goal in mind: to capture the non-traditional Zinfandel consumer. For this consumer group, the “Way to Zinlightenment” is a blend specially crafted to be softer and sweeter than traditional Zinfandels in the Constellation Brands portfolio. Zen of Zin also offers a more lifestyle-driven approach to Zinfandel, encouraging wine drinkers to pour often, experiment freely, seek beauty, breathe deeply, and share wisdom.
