Disaster Preparedness

In this episode of Wine and Dime we cover Disaster Preparedness. This is a topic that I was thinking a lot about this week, with the flooding in my home town and the Hurricanes that some of my clients were experiencing on the east coast. I cover some things that I went through and some tips that may help during a potential financial burden.

Shaw.png

Shaw Vineyard is a Finger Lakes artisanal winery dedicated to gentle processing, cellar aging, and risk taking. Since 2002, Shaw has stretched the limits of cool-climate winemaking, experimenting with hands-on, old world methods to enhance the expression of some of the world’s most celebrated varietals.

We believe in sustainable viticulture and fine agricultural craftmanship. This is a vineyard-focused winery, owned and operated by a winemaker and grape grower with over 40 years of vinifera experience.

What are orange-style wines?

They are not wines made from oranges.

Instead, they are white wines made like red wine (i.e. skin contact). This is an ancient method of winemaking that is still done in rural areas in Europe, mostly in eastern Europe.

Steve Shaw was one of the first Finger Lakes winemakers to throw caution to the wind and dedicate large, commercially viable lots to the orange wine experiment. The first vintage was 2013, and it was extremely successful with both critics and consumers. The second vintage, in 2014, went even further by allowing skin contact for over an entire year before pressing!

Grapes used thus far in orange wine have been Gewürztraminer, Sauvignon Blanc, and Pinot Grigio. These orange wines will not undergo filtration and are made in a cloudy vin rustique style, enhancing mouth feel and texture.

Orange wines are very approachable but they defy typical expectations. In some respects they can have the bounce of a white wine but the depth of a red, and yet the flavors are difficult to pin down in one easy description. Curious wine enthusiasts have something different to try at Shaw Vineyard.

Between Generations - The Cost of Silence

In this episode of Wine and Dime Kerrie Beene guest hosts and we bring back a Webinar that Kerrie did. In it she is talking about the dynamics that come into play while dealing with loved ones when getting older. She talks about the barriers and the downfalls of not having a plan and some of things to think about. This a great episode for anyone of any generation.

Living Roots is an urban winery in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York [Colleen’s hometown] and a not-so-urban winery in the Adelaide Hills region of South Australia [Sebastian’s hometown].

Though Living Roots was founded in 2016, our legacy began six generations back with Thomas Hardy, Seb’s great-great-great grandfather. In 1850, at the age of 20, Thomas immigrated to the new British colony, Australia, and jumpstarted 150+ years of family winemaking. Seb grew up in his dad’s vineyards, particularly in the Kuitpo subregion of the Adelaide Hills, got a degree in Viticulture and Oenology in Adelaide, with an exchange in California, and worked vintages all over the world.

On the other side of the world, Colleen grew up in Rochester, New York [spending time around the Finger Lakes region], studied marketing, worked in corporate America, and headed to Adelaide for the 2014 vintage at Hardy’s Tintara Winery when she was ready for a new adventure.

We established Living Roots in 2016, and started splitting our time between South Australia and New York, doing two harvests each year. We source grapes from different vineyards and growers, including from both of our families, and some wines are made year-to-year while others are one-offs. In the Finger Lakes, our focus is on rich whites and sparklings, and in South Australia, it’s vibrant, medium-bodied reds. Each vintage is an opportunity to explore new vineyards and varieties, and our aim is to highlight the terroir and natural strengths of these diverse regions, making wines with wild ferments, minimal inputs and maximum deliciousness.

We opened the Living Roots urban winery and tasting room in Rochester, New York in 2017, bringing our Finger Lakes and South Australian wines to the Upstate New York market first. Now, we’re putting more emphasis on Living Roots’s presence in Australia, expanding distribution and setting up a cellar door with tastings by appointment in Kuitpo where we have our small winery. Stay tuned for what’s next!

August is Estate Planning month for us here at Rooted Planning Group. We couldn’t think of a better time to re-release this episode with Amy Refeca. We think there is a lot of great information here that anyone can use.

One thing that I found very interesting is what Any calls "The Six D's of Estate Planning.  And these center around life events that may trigger an Estate Plan, or a need to revisit the Plan.

  1. Death

  2. Divorce/Marriage

  3. Birth Day

  4. Disabled or Illness

  5. Dividend or Income

  6. Distance.  If you or someone moves a distance near or far away.

Hello Wine and Dime listeners. On this weeks episode, we step away from the monthly topic about debt, and talk about another hot topic, Burnout. Kate Lee from Brimstone Consulting Group stops by to help us discuss this topic. Kate is the Managing Director at Brimstone and has worked all around the globe and with fortune 500 companies. Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. It occurs when you feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and unable to meet constant demands.

With all the stress that Covid-19 brought on, and the new challenges that had to be overcome, burnout has become a more and more prevalent issue with companies asking employees to return to the office.

larson_kate_2016-web_1.jpg

Name

Katherine Larson

Title

Curator of Ancient Glass

Katherine (Kate) Larson assumed responsibility for the ancient glass collection in July 2017, after joining the Corning Museum of Glass as curatorial assistant in 2016. She is responsible for the historical glass collection from its origins until 1250 CE. Larson also serves as Assistant Editor for the Journal of Glass Studies.

Larson is interested in ancient glass technologies and how people thought about and interacted with the material we call “glass.” She is active in archaeological fieldwork and has worked on sites in Israel, Greece, and Turkey. Larson is the author of Ancient and Islamic Glass: Selections from the Corning Museum of Glass, presenting more than 50 objects from the Museum’s permanent collection.

Larson holds a Ph.D. in Classical Art and Archaeology from the University of Michigan, an M.A. in Classical and Near Eastern Studies from the University of Minnesota, and a B.A. in Classical Archaeology from Macalester College. Previously, she held positions at the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology and the Science Museum of Minnesota and interned at the Archaeological Museum of Corinth in Greece.

Fire and Vine:

The Story of Glass and Wine Opens July 3 at The Corning Museum of Glass

On July 3, 2021, The Corning Museum of Glass (CMoG), located within New York State’s Finger Lakes Wine Country, will open Fire and Vine: The Story of Glass and Wine, a special exhibit exploring the deeply entwined relationship between wine and glass. Presenting the art, history, and science of how glass touches wine as it travels from the grape, to the bottle, and to the cup on our table, the exhibit is largely drawn from the Museum’s own holdings, the world’s most comprehensive collection of glass. Fire and Vine will also demonstrate how the combination of wine and glass has figured into social gatherings for thousands of years from the lavish feasts of Ancient Rome, to the polite society of 1700s Britain, and to the essential experience within our food culture today. The exhibit is organized by Katherine Larson, curator of Ancient Glass at CMoG.

Katherine Larson said, “It is easy to forget that the empty glass cups, pitchers, ewers, and bottles in museum display cases once held lush and luxuriant wine. For Fire and Vine, we have brought together objects that tell the story of how, for more than 2,500 years, the strength, impermeability, and versatility of glass have played an important role in every step of a wine’s journey—factoring into the production, distribution, sale, and ultimately the enjoyment of this intoxicating beverage.”

Fire and Vine will feature a display of dozens of wine glasses from around the world, representing the many styles, tastes, and occasions where wine was part of the festivities. Highlights of the exhibit also include a rare 2,000-year-old fragment of cameo glass depicting a grape harvest, a still-sealed bottle of wine found in an 18th-century shipwreck off the coast of England, a 17th-century Italian document describing an “almost unbreakable glass jar” that could prevent wine from spoiling, and a set of antique French hydrometers for measuring the alcohol content of wine, among other fascinating objects pulled from the Museum’s permanent collection, as well as from the collection of the Museum’s Rakow Research Library, most of which have seldom been on display.

The story of glass and wine has particular relevance in the Finger Lakes of New York State. The Finger Lakes is the home of U.S. Bonded Winery No. 1, established in 1860, and where cold-climate European vinifera grape varieties—like Riesling—were first introduced in eastern North America in the mid-20th century. Concurrent with the growth of Finger Lakes wines, Corning, New York emerged as the “Crystal City,” widely recognized as a world leader for its accomplishments in glass artistry and innovation. Independent, entrepreneurial winemakers, and glass artists have found a mutual home in this region, building on historical tradition with new creative energy that makes Corning and the Finger Lakes Wine Country a hub for the entwined industries. Recognizing this important shared history, the exhibit will also include objects on loan from the Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery and Pleasant Valley Wine Company, the oldest winery in the Finger Lakes Region, including sealed bottles of historic vintages from these notable wineries. The Glenn H. Curtiss Museum will also contribute to the exhibit.

“Two of the most powerful stories in Finger Lakes Wine Country’s history center around wine and glass. The story that’s not often told is how imperative glass is to wine, so the Fire & Vine exhibit is exciting in that regard,” said Laury Ward, President of Finger Lakes Wine Country. “Finger Lakes wines continue to receive global recognition for our high quality, cool climate varietals. There is no denying our winemaking legacy would be incomplete without our history in glassmaking to complement it.”
