Wine and Dime Episode 87 - Nerding Out On Student Debt with Ryan Inman

In this episode of Wine and Dime I chat with self proclaimed nerd, Ryan Inman. Ryan is a very driven individual who keeps himself very busy with many different endeavors! He owns a fee only financial planning practice specializing in Doctors called Physician Wealth Services, has a podcast called Financial Residency, and helped launch an online student loan helper called Loan Buddy. Ryan is truly passionate about helping people with their Student Loan Debt, and I guess that’s why we get along so well. We talk about all those things and much more, so be sure to tune in a check it out!

inman-family-physician-welath-service-1500x1000.jpg

Ryan Inman

I graduated from the University of San Diego (USD) with a BA in Business Administration, an MA in Accounting and Financial Management, and an MA in Business Administration. During grad school, I worked at Merrill Lynch under a fantastic advisor, but soon realized that the average advisor in the industry was more concerned with selling financial products and obtaining new clients with investable assets than working with those who could really use the financial guidance to succeed in life.

That really turned me off from the industry, so I switched gears and worked for KPMG in public accounting. During my second year, I was fortunate to run into an old friend who was a CFP® and a fee-only financial planner. He introduced me to the concept of fee-only financial planning, where planners put their clients first, don’t sell products, and are true fiduciaries. It sounded too good to be true. I decided to join his firm where I had an amazing hands-on experience learning what true financial planning was all about – working with clients and helping them achieve their financial goals! While I enjoyed my time there, I ultimately learned I didn’t want to work with the ultra-wealthy as much as young physicians who were starting their careers and could really benefit from truly unbiased, quality financial advice.

I have an intimate knowledge of the pains, struggles, and joys that come from a career in medicine. I know what it’s like to be buried in debt while your physician spouse makes next to nothing and spends every fourth night in the hospital. I understand what you’re going through; my wife and I have been there.

I started my fee-only practice to help physicians sleep well at night knowing they have a trusted advisor who is guiding them toward financial independence. This is my family practice. My goal is to take care of you while you take care of your patients. I’ll be accessible when you are – in the evenings after you get your kids to bed, during your commute home, or in between patients. Short of the overnight shift, consider me on-call.

PWS-Logo-White-2.jpg

Physician Wealth Services (PWS) is a fee-only financial planning practice helping physician families take control of their finances to position themselves for a bright financial future. Sleeping well at night knowing they have a trusted advisor who is guiding them toward financial independence is exactly why we’re here.

Our goal is to take care of you while you take care of your patients. We will be accessible when you are – in the evenings after you get your kids to bed, during your commute home, or in between patients. Short of the overnight shift, consider us on-call.

Providing trustworthy, unbiased financial advice to dedicated, hard-working people like you and our own families demonstrates our passion to walk with you on your financial journey.

Schedule a time to discuss how we can help get you onto the right path.

About Financial Residency

Financial Residency is made up of hundreds of attendings, residents, and their spouses (800+ to be more exact!) who just about had it with their financial challenges.

They know how it feels to struggle with student loan debt, be in survival mode during residency, long to save money for retirement, in some instances, moonlight, and, depending on their medical journey, invest $$ where it makes the most sense for them and/or their family’s financial future.

As a community who cares for each other, we exist to arm you with financial knowledge so that you can protect and grow your assets.

We also aim to shield you from insurance agents, stock brokers, fee based financial planners, and lenders who rely on making that extra buck off selling products and services you don’t need. Don’t you hate that?

Being a part of the Financial Residency community brings you up to speed on your financial literacy to confidently take control of your household finances.

Sound good to you? Start right here!

loanbuddy.png

WHY LOANBUDDY

Finally, a real service to help you conquer your student loan debt.

There are over 100 different options when it comes to student loans. From different loan types, to different repayment plans, to forgiveness options, to more complex things like deferment and forbearance.

It’s confusing.

For years, borrowers have had to rely on the help from the loan servicers - which if you’ve watched the news lately - might not be the best.

And every year, as Congress tries to make things better, they just end up making things more confusing - and even scaring people with threats to end certain programs. The fact is, student loans are confusing, scary, challenging, and more.

LoanBuddy is redefining what it means to get out of student loan debt.

Belching-Beaver-Dam-Good-Times-PNG.png

…came from a desire to make great beer and have a Dam good time doing it. When we started the company we wanted to do two things: First, have a brand that offered quality craft beer but was whimsical and fun to inspire good times. From the Winking Milkman to El Castor de Mariachi you can see each Beaver has its own individual style and personality. Second, we wanted to make beer for everyone and all palates. We have easy-drinking Blondes, Triple IPAs, Milk Stouts, Imperial Stouts as well as sours and barrel-aged beers. You name it, we have it! Good times to you my friend, and welcome to the Beaver family!

Wine and Dime Episode 86 - Community Over Competition with Elizabeth Hill

In this episode of Wine and Dime I have a great conversation with someone who like me has two passions in life. Where mine is Personal Finance and Wine, hers is Law and Wine. My guest, Elizabeth Hill, has her own law practice in Texas, and also owns her own Winery called Burklee Hill Vineyards. We had a wonderful talk about the complexity of owning your own law practice, owning your own vineyard, and raising a family. So, sit on back, pop open a bottle of your favorite wine and enjoy the show.

Elizabeth Geary Hill

BurkleeHillVineyards.png

ABOUT

Burklee Hill Vineyards is a family-owned winery producing locally-grown wine from the Texas High Plains. The Hill family has grown wine grapes on the Texas High Plains since 2002 on land farmed by the family for five generations. With a passion for quality, local wine, we founded Burklee Hill Vineyards in a tribute to the generations of family members that have inspired us to seek excellence in all we do.

The name, “Burklee,” was chosen in tribute to Chace Hill’s grandfathers, Burk Roberts and Eddie “Lee” Courtney. Burk was named after Chace’s great-grandfather, Burnett Burk, who previously owned and farmed the land where the vineyard is located today.

Chace and Elizabeth were original, founding members of Trilogy Cellars and look forward to continuing the tradition of 100% Texas wine through the Burklee Hill tasting rooms in both Levelland and Lubbock. Lubbock is set to open at 1109 Broadway in summer 2019. We hope you will raise a toast to Texas wine and visit us soon!

Wine and Dime Episode 85 - Financial Planning and Family, with Taylor Anderson

Hello again Wine and Dime listeners. In this episode, I have the incredible pleasure of speaking with Taylor Anderson. Taylor is a CFP with Middleton and Company, a financial planning company specializing in helping you establish healthy financial habits that build a strong financial foundation. Taylor also spent some time in the Peace Corps and has proven to give her a unique view on helping anybody. This was a fantastic chat that I’m sure you all will enjoy!

Taylor.jpg

Taylor Anderson, CFP®

Taylor’s passion for personal financial planning started when she and her husband decided to take a break from their traditional career paths in Seattle to join the Peace Corps. She served for 2 years in Kyrgyzstan before joining her family-owned financial planning business in Vancouver, WA. She loves working with clients who are ambitious in both their careers and their hobbies and is most excited when she gets to hear about her clients’ travel plans. Her favorite challenge is to help her clients build flexibility into their financial plans so they’re able to enjoy the twists and turns of life as they come.

Taylor began her career in consulting and project management roles at large companies, so she knows what it’s like to make decisions on benefits, to advocate for herself in annual reviews, and to navigate corporate work environments. Taylor brings her prior experience to her financial planning work by adding creativity to the more technical things – think mindmaps, roadmaps, and her favorite…brainstorming with Post-Its!

On weekends you can find Taylor skiing or hiking in the backcountry. Weeknights very often include a run with a local run club and a good conversation over a beer or glass of wine.

Dr-Konstantin-Frank-2017-Blaufrankisch-Web.jpg

VINTAGE: The 2017 vintage was a study on how much weather conditions can vary from year to year. The 2016 growing year was very hot and dry with very little precipitation. Winter before the 2017 growing season was cold but our vines survived without any damage. The 2017 growing season was cooler with ample precipitation all year long with plenty of sunshine. That made for a vintage with good production and plenty of time to develop complexity.

VINEYARD: Blaufränkisch was planted in 2014 on our Seneca vineyard located in Hector, NY in the warmest mesoclimate in the Finger Lakes known as the ‘Banana Belt’. Temperatures here are a few degrees warmer than Keuka thus providing riper fruit notes. Soils on Seneca are characterized by deep honeoye silt loam. A small portion of the blend comes from Eric Volz Vineyard, just north across the road from Dr. Konstantin Frank’s plantings on Keuka Lake. The vineyard was planted in 1985 by Walter Volz, the winery’s first Vineyard Manager. This vineyard is managed by Eric Volz, current Vineyard Manager for the winery, who worked alongside his father Walter and grandfather, Dr. Konstantin Frank. Soils here are shallow with high natural acidity and high amounts of shale. The vines are planted on 3309 rootstocks.

THE WINE: Medium intensity with dominant characters of blackberry, plum, black cherry and chickory and toasted rye. The fresh acidity makes it feel lighter on the palate. Dry with velvety tannins. Medium-bodied.

FOOD PAIRING: Tomato-based Sauces, Blackened Salmon, Hard Cheeses, Grilled Vegetables.

PINOT NOIR

Grown on a mix of sand and clay soils, this Pinot truly expresses the “terroir” of the Finger Lakes. Complex, yet delicate, this wine ages well for 3-5 years!

Tasting Notes

On the nose, sweet vanilla with hints of soft, smoky sweetness. Flavors of smooth sweet cherry lead to strong tannins with a smooth, fruit-driven structure.

Wine and Dime Episode 80 - Live at FinCon with Elder Laywer, Cathy Sikorski

Hi there Wine and Dime listeners, welcome to a very special edition of the show, where we are live at FinCon 2019. While here at the conference we were able to connect with a ton of people, and one of those people was Cathy Sikorski. This talk was a real treat, and we had a great conversation about elder law, and as Cathy pointed out to me, there is a big difference between elder law and estate law. And that is “Elder lawyer are for living people, Estate Lawyers are for dead people.” This was really engaging conversation that was enjoyed over a glass of wine, and I’m sure that you will enjoy the episode as much as I enjoyed sitting down with her!!

Cathy Sikorski

Cathy Sikorski has been a significant caregiver for the last 20 years. In addition to that, she has been a practicing attorney in her own practice, dealing largely in Elder Law, with over 12 years of education in issues dealing with Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. She began her legal career in general practice in a small town where she grew up and was known to a large contingent of the population through her family. Many of her clients were older adults, which lent her practice to dealing with elder issues. During that time, Cathy went on leave to attempt stay-at-home mothering and ended up staying at home and mothering all kinds of people. First, her Nana came to stay. But since then, she has been the primary caregiver for her great aunt for seven years, her amazing mother-in-law until she almost reached 97 years old, currently her brother-in-law who is wheelchair bound and suffers from multiple sclerosis, and a very dear friend who is permanently disabled from an accidental brain injury four years ago.

Fortunately, each and every one of these special people has a rockin’ sense of humor during medical appointments, nudity, and other areas of indignity (well, except the great aunt…who didn’t like to laugh). So this caregiving thing, yea, she’s got it covered, and is continuously consulted by everyone she meets about caregiving personally and with her legal background.
