Wine and Dime Episode 59 - From Teacher to Financial Planner with Ryan Frailich
In this episode of Wine and Dime I chat with Ryan Frailich of Deliberate Finances. Ryan’s life has been a journey… going from a teacher to a financial planner specializing in young couples and educators. This episode was also a journey, as we explore what lead Ryan to helping teachers. This was a great conversation that I’m sure you will enjoy!

Before becoming a fee-only financial planner, I worked as a teacher and then as a school administrator overseeing HR, including recruiting and hiring teachers. Working in HR revealed a lot about the financial lives of employees, and that’s where the lightbulb went off:
Too many people feel overwhelmed with their finances, always wondering if they're making mistakes. And too many people who want help are taken advantage of or shut out by our financial institutions.
I changed careers, earned a certificate in financial planning from L.S.U., became a CFP® professional, and started Deliberate Finances.
When not working, I’m exploring New Orleans with my wife & young son, running or biking around the city, or watching way too many hours of tragic Minnesota sports teams.
Buffalo Trace Whiskey
Ancient buffalo carved paths through the wilderness that led American pioneers and explorers to new frontiers. One such trail led to the banks of the Kentucky River where Buffalo Trace Distillery has been making bourbon whiskey the same way for more than 200 years. In tribute to the mighty buffalo and the rugged, independent spirit of the pioneers who followed them, we created our signature Buffalo Trace Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey.
TASTING NOTES:
This deep amber whiskey has a complex aroma of vanilla, mint and molasses. Pleasantly sweet to the taste with notes of brown sugar and spice that give way to oak, toffee, dark fruit and anise. This whiskey finishes long and smooth with serious depth.

Watkins Glen State Park is the most famous of the Finger Lakes State Parks, with a reputation for leaving visitors spellbound. Within two miles, the glen's stream descends 400 feet past 200-foot cliffs, generating 19 waterfalls along its course. The gorge path winds over and under waterfalls and through the spray of Cavern Cascade. Rim trails overlook the gorge. Campers and day-visitors can enjoy the Olympic-size pool, scheduled summer tours through the gorge, tent and trailer campsites, picnic facilities and excellent fishing in nearby Seneca Lake or Catherine Creek, which is renowned for its annual spring run of rainbow trout.

Wine and Dime Episode 55 - Getting Perspective with Compassionate Care Attorney Antonio Martin
Welcome to Episode 55 of Wine and Dime. In this episode I speak with a lawyer that I have dubbed “The Compassionate Care Attorney”, Antonio Martin. Antonio owns a law firm in Celebration, Florida and is “committed to providing excellent legal representation to individuals, families, and businesses throughout Florida.” This episode is all about getting perspective. Perspective of others lives, perspective of other cultures, perspective of others thoughts… you get the idea. And how that can make you a better person, and in Antonio’s case, a better person. I think you will enjoy the episode as much as I enjoyed our conversation. So sit back, pop open a bottle of Bold Blackberry wine(one of Antonio’s favorites), and enjoy the show!
Antonio Martin, Esq.
Martin Law Group
1420 Celebration Blvd, Suite 200,
Celebration, Florida 34747
863-949-0892
As a child my Grandmother repeatedly said that in order to master a game, you have to know the rules. As an attorney, understanding the rules of law means finding unique, well-founded resolutions and sharing them with my clients."
Antonio Martin, Esq.
Antonio Martin was born in Jacksonville, Florida and raised in Central Florida as a determined and successful student-athlete. Having eight living family members over the age of 90 years old helped Martin appreciate wise counsel and broad perspectives both in the here and now as well as the foreseeable future. Martin's unique definition of success comes from his view on life thanks to his courageous and hardworking elders... family traits he wishes to honor via every accomplishment achieved.
While Martin attended high school he garnered several incredible accolades from earning the #1 position in the country in the 800m in Track & Field to obtaining a Bright Futures Academic Scholarship. Mr. Martin has purposefully cultivated a personality of perseverance and excellence from an early age. During his tenure at Florida State University, he continued to practice perseverance in his track career, winning several medals within the Atlantic Coast Conference, while pursuing excellence by making the Dean's list several semesters. Martin received his Bachelor's of Science in 2004, after which he furthered his education by spending time abroad in China experiencing different perspectives in the world. He then made certain to apply those diverse perspectives in the pursuit of a law degree at Florida A&M College of Law.
As a law student, a father of his first daughter, and a sales representative in business-to-business sales, our founder learned the importance of relationships and communication. In fact, the time spent in the customer service industry gave birth to the vision for his own law firm which he established in 2011. As the Managing Attorney of Martin Law Group, P.L., Attorney Martin very quickly recognized a nexus between providing effective legal counsel and communication driven customer service that was missing amongst his competitors. Mr. Martin emphasizes, "Stellar legal advocacy without adequate client communication produces an unsatisfied client. Legal strategies provide legal solutions, but client communication provides client peace of mind."
Attorney Martin's personal experiences in both real estate and family law gives him a profound understanding of the importance of clarity when making important decisions. His highest desire is to provide the clarity Martin wished he had during his own personal experiences regarding family law and real estate. Martin Law Group is determined to provide clarity and peace of mind to our clients, to enable them to make educated decisions taking all involved parties, minute details, finances, time, and reputation into account.
Attorney Martin currently sits on the Board for “Housing for All”, an organization dedicated to providing transitional housing for the homeless. He recently has also been sworn in as an officer on the Board of Trustees for the Osceola County Salvation Army.
"In considering Dr. Stephen Covey's famous quote, 'Begin with the end in mind' we at Martin Law Group believe that a clear strategy requires a clear desired outcome."
Antonio Martin, Esq.
Island Grove Wine Company
Island Grove Wine Company is a division of Island Grove Ag Products (IGAP), a major supplier of fresh organic and conventional blueberries harvested throughout Florida. Producing approximately 2 million pounds of fresh fruit per year, we were looking for an innovative way to use our quality berries that were not sold to the fresh market. In 2010, the Island Grove Wine Company was born, where we could use our fresh fruit to create exceptional fruit wine. Along with our skilled winemaker, Chase Marden, the team at Island Grove has grown the winery since then, with over 16 different wine offerings and more to come.
Our main location is in the tiny town of beautiful Island Grove, in North Central Florida amidst the large oak trees and quiet country roads. Our newest location is just a few miles from Disney in Kissimmee, Florida, where every day is a celebration.
We are proud of our healthy, antioxidant-rich berries and the wonderful wines that we have created. We offer a full selection of sweet and dry, 100% fruit and fruit-infused grape wines that we hope you enjoy.
Cheers!

Hazlitt Winery
There are two stories here — ours and yours.
Our story goes something like this.
Back in 1852, David Hazlitt bought 153 acres of fruit trees and vineyards here in Hector, NY. Over the next six generations, various Hazlitts farmed the land, raised families and made wine. OK, we don’t know for sure that they all made wine, but given the great grapes that grow here and the current generation’s track record for producing amazing wine, we’ve got a feeling they did.
We do know for sure that in 1985, Jerry and Elaine Hazlitt founded Hazlitt 1852 Vineyards. Today, our family keeps the tradition going. Our grapes make award-winning wines. Our wines make us new friends. And we love making both.
Did it start with dinner with friends at one of those chic little restaurants in the Finger Lakes, with us at the horseshoe bar in our tasting room or with a special someone on a first-date picnic? Maybe it was our Cabernet Franc that made you a Hazlitt fan. Or a Riesling or a Sauvignon Blanc. Was it love at first sip with our legendary Ice Wine or did our Red Cat bring on a different sort of romantic mood? Everybody’s got a Hazlitt story—and if you don’t, click here to get started.

Wine and Dime episode 53 - Buyer Beware with Heather Townsend
Hey Wine and Dime listeners, welcome to episode 53. In this episode I chat with Heather Townsend. Heather is a CFP and owner of Townsend Financial. Heather and I share a passion of financial education. As you hear in this episode, we feel that there is a real need for people to more educated in financial planning sector. I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I enjoyed talking to her. So pop open a bottle of your favorite Malbec and enjoy the episode!
Hi, I’m Heather Townsend
CFP® & CPA
A love of numbers has been with me since I was a teenager. In high school, my dad actually found an envelope of cash hidden in my room and uncovered that I wasn't spending my allowance (sorry, dad). I was saving it! Along with the money, he found a note where I had calculated exactly how much I needed to save for my dream car, a BMW (admittedly, I still have a thing for cars!)
As I began my career helping companies become wealthier, I noticed that a lot of my friends were coming to me for financial advice. I would get so consumed with helping them accomplish their financial goals and I saw the difference it made in their lives that that's when I knew my new life’s mission. And from there, I launched Townsend Financial to help women like you.
HEATHER HAS TAKEN A FIDUCIARY OATH TO ALWAYS ACT IN THE CLIENT'S BEST INTEREST.
Heather graduated from Arizona State University, W.P. Carey School of Business, with a BS in Accountancy. She then worked in the San Francisco and NYC offices of a global accounting firm, advising high net-worth individuals and Fortune 500 companies. In London, she served as Financial Director for a top-end property development firm, counseling owners on the best ways to use profits. She is both a Certified Financial Planner™ and CPA (Certified Public Accountant). Townsend Financial is a member of NAPFA and XY Planning Network.
Fulkerson Winery
THE WINEMAKER’S WINERY
We used to be a simple farm, growing raspberries & grapes. Then, we took it a step further; we acquired Jensen Juice and began to offer fresh grape juice to home winemakers. Before we knew it, our passion grew into the Fulkerson Winery you know & love today. We believe progression is natural, and we are proud to have become the winemaker’s winery.
LEMBERGER (BLAUFRANKISCH)
Lemberger is officially classified under the name “Blauer Limberger,” this red grape variety also goes by the synonyms “Lemberger” and “Blaufränkisch.” The late-ripening Lemberger probably originated in vineyards on the lower stretches of the Danube River. The grape was documented in Austria in the second half of the 18th century and is cultivated there to this day (as Blaufränkisch) in Burgenland and near Vienna.
This wine has a brilliant color, is full bodied fruit and aroma, and has been aged in oak for 6 months.

Ventosa Winery
100% ESTATE GROWN WINERY
Our 23 acres of estate vineyards overlooking Seneca Lake consist only of vinifera varietals. Ventosa Vineyards is known for producing quality dry red wines such as our award-winning Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir and the popular Italian varietal Sangiovese. Ventosa is also one of the few New York State wineries that grow and produce Tocai Friulano, a white Italian varietal. When visiting the winery, you will learn about the specific grapes grown here on the estate.
OLDER VINTAGE RED WINES
While our focus is primarily on dry reds, we are committed to producing wines that are sure to please any tasting profile. Ventosa Vineyards wines are 100% estate grown, produced and bottled. In order to accentuate the quality of our red wines, we ensure that they age in oak 1 to 3 years & at least 1 year in the cellar after being bottled. As a result, you will find some of the oldest vintages of red wines in the Finger Lakes here in our winery.
NUTRIENT-RICH SOIL
The vineyard at Ventosa is supported by a nutrient-rich clay loam soil. All vineyard work is done manually, without the aid of herbicide sprays which can sterilize the soil. Our annual case production is lower, with an average of 4,000 cases a year, because we practice 35-40% fruit thinning before veraison (or the onset of ripening). This practice sacrifices high yields but affords better quality juice as more of each vines’ energy goes into fewer grape clusters. We strive for greater quality rather than mass quantity.

Polar Passport
Valid daily: December 3, 2018 – March 31, 2019
Time: During each winery’s regular tasting room hours. See list below of participating wineries and their hours.
Price: $30.00 plus sales tax, one passport per person. 16 wineries to visit (4 have limited weekday hours)
Passports can be purchased below online and mailed directly to you 3 weeks in advance of your visit. If you are visiting inside of 3 weeks, you should purchased directly at a participating winery. Passports go on sale the first day they are valid, limited quantities are sold and all passport products are non-refundable.
This passport is not intended for large groups. If you are traveling in groups of 8 or more people, additional tasting fees will apply. Visit our Large Group Tours page to learn more about large groups on the Seneca Lake Wine Trail.
Visit the Trail during the best time of year: the off season! The Polar Passport gives residents and visitors alike a convenient and affordable way to enjoy many of the wineries on the Seneca Lake Wine Trail. And while many people enjoy visiting the wineries during the busy summer and autumn season, the winter season is actually the best time to visit when owners, winemakers and vineyard managers are more likely to be in the tasting room.
Passports are an especially great value for regional residents that can readily visit our Trail more than once per season, enabling them to explore the participating wineries across multiple weeks. Normal tasting fees at the wineries ranges from $3-$5 per winery for a standard flight of wine samples. One-time visitors to the region that plan on visiting at least 8 or more wineries will likely also find this product to be a good value. If your plan is to visit fewer than 8 wineries, then it is probably wise to not purchase the passport, and instead pay the incremental tasting fees that are common to most wineries in the region.
Here is how it works: A passport is a simple document that for a set price enables an individual to enjoy a complimentary, standard flight of wines at each of the participating wineries listed in the booklet, one time each. Once you’ve purchased a passport, you can visit any of the participating wineries during their regular business hours, at your leisure. Each winery will stamp the appropriate space in your passport. There are no blackout dates, and they are good during each wineries’ regular business hours; you may visit some wineries one day, come back at a later date and visit a few more!
Our passport products continue to feature a perk that we found to be successful and appreciated by our customers. If you purchase at least one bottle of wine a majority of the participating wineries, make sure the winery stamps that separate designated page in your passport, mail that stamped page back to the Trail office by the due date, and you will receive a complimentary passport of the same kind, for next season! Please review each page in the passport to learn more about the individual participating winery and any specials they may have.
Savory World of Seneca

How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big: Kind of the Story of My Life - Scott Adams
Scott Adams has likely failed at more things than anyone you’ve ever met or anyone you’ve even heard of. So how did he go from hapless office worker and serial failure to the creator of Dilbert, one of the world’s most famous syndicated comic strips, in just a few years? In How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big, Adams shares the game plan he’s followed since he was a teen: invite failure in, embrace it, then pick its pocket.
No career guide can offer advice that works for everyone. As Adams explains, your best bet is to study the ways of others who made it big and try to glean some tricks and strategies that make sense for you. Adams pulls back the covers on his own unusual life and shares how he turned one failure after another—including his corporate career, his inventions, his investments, and his two restaurants—into something good and lasting. There’s a lot to learn from his personal story, and a lot of entertainment along the way. Adams discovered some unlikely truths that helped to propel him forward. For instance:
• Goals are for losers. Systems are for winners.
• “Passion” is bull. What you need is personal energy.
• A combination of mediocre skills can make you surprisingly valuable.
• You can manage your odds in a way that makes you look lucky to others.
Adams hopes you can laugh at his failures while discovering some unique and helpful ideas on your own path to personal victory. As he writes: “This is a story of one person’s unlikely success within the context of scores of embarrassing failures. Was my eventual success primarily a result of talent, luck, hard work, or an accidental just-right balance of each? All I know for sure is that I pursued a conscious strategy of managing my opportunities in a way that would make it easier for luck to find me.”

Wine and Dime Episode 50 - Nephews in the House, with Trey and Conner
“Try orange juice with your waffle’s people” - Trey Meehan, 14 years old.
That was some of the advice we got in this episode of Wine and Dime.
I was so happy to have my nephews down for a weekend, and they were happy to be here. Not only because of the trips to the beach, and to the amusement park, but because while they were here in Florida, their parents were stuck in a snow storm in upstate NY.
While they were here, I couldn’t pass on the opportunity to have them on the show. We talked about what they wanted to be when they grew up, how school was going and they even shared what their favorite beverage was… Chocolate Milk and Gatorade.
We had a wonderful time and I can’t wait to have them down again. So sit back and enjoy the perspectives of a 14 and 11 year old on this weeks edition of Wine and Dime!
