Wine and Dime

"Trust" Me, You Need to Listen to This Episode on Estate Planning

Hey there Wine and Dime listener!

Are you ready to dive into the world of estate planning with me? In this episode, we're going to talk about trusts - and trust me, it's not as complicated as you might think!

First, I'll give you an overview of the different types of trusts, including testamentary trusts, living trusts, and irrevocable trusts. We'll also dive into specific types of irrevocable trusts, like irrevocable life insurance trusts and charitable remainder trusts. Don't worry, I'll make sure you understand all the parties involved in a trust, including the grantor, beneficiary, and trustee.

One thing that I find super important is having a pour-over provision will to account for any assets accidentally left out of the trust. As a trustee, it's crucial to know about this provision and how it works - trust me on this one!

There are so many reasons for forming a trust, like blended households, clear asset distribution, privacy of asset distribution, and asset protection. And if you want to learn more, you can always check out the resources on the Rooted Planning Group website.

As always, don't forget to rate and subscribe to the show. And a big shoutout to T.J. Meehan, who helps with production. If you have any questions or want to learn more, you can contact me through the Rooted Planning Group website or follow us on social media.

Summary of Discussion:

In this fruitful discussion, Amy Irvine, founder of Rooted Planning Group, takes a deep dive into estate planning with a focus on trusts. The episode uncovers the different types of trusts, including Testamentary, Living, and Irrevocable Trusts, each serving unique purposes.

Amy also explains the roles of the three key players in a trust: The Grantor (who creates and funds the trust), the Beneficiary (who ultimately receives the proceeds from the trust), and the Trustee (who has a fiduciary responsibility to manage the trust).

Amy touches on the vital role of an executor who works closely with the trustee to ensure a smooth asset transfer. This episode also explores situations where forming a trust could be particularly beneficial, including blended households, probate reduction, privacy of asset distribution, and asset protection.

Winery Recommendation:

Get your corkscrews ready because this episode's wine recommendation is Bricoleur Vineyards, a French winery in beautiful Sonoma County. While Amy hasn't tasted their wines yet, she was drawn to their theme of "roots," which resonates with the spirit of the Rooted Planning Group. They have a strong focus on their vineyard's roots, reminding us of the deep-seated connections between life, finances, and good wine.

This episode is a must-listen for anyone looking to take a deeper understanding of trusts and estate planning. Virginia is for Wine Lovers:

In this episode, host Amy Irvine takes a detour from the economic discussion to share her passion for wine, specifically exploring the wine industry in Virginia. She reveals that wine production in the state dates back to the early days of European colonization in the 17th century. Despite the hot and humid summers that can pose a challenge to viticulture, the Virginia wine industry has grown significantly in the last 20 years.

Amy highlights that French hybrid varieties account for about 20% of the total grape production in Virginia, while American varietals make up approximately 5%. She shares the top ten varietals produced in the region, such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Viognier. Amy also notes that the central and northern Virginia County area, particularly just east of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is responsible for a significant portion of the state's wine production.

Amy's enthusiasm for the Virginia wine industry is evident as she expresses her desire to visit and explore the region in person, and she encourages listeners to share their recommendations for great Virginia wines that she could try and potentially feature on the show in the future.

Amy's Wine Pick of the Week

MARK WEST PINOT NOIR

TASTING NOTES

The original. Medium-bodied with black cherry, cola, strawberry, plum, and soft tannins. No wonder this Pinot is a favorite.

PAIRS PERFECTLY WITH

Pastas with light tomato-based sauces, a juicy cheeseburger, grilled salmon, roasted pork tenderloin, or if you're not a cook, drink it on its own.

WINEMAKING NOTES

We selected grapes from vineyards in the finest cool-climate regions of California in order to bring you a balanced fruit-forward Pinot Noir. After early morning harvesting, we gently crush and destem the fruit. We then ferment it in small stainless steel tanks, with daily punch-downs and pump-overs...basically, that's what we do to help get the great flavor and color you love. After a light pressing, we age the wine with French oak, then we blend it, bottle it, and you enjoy it.

Wine and Dime Episode 6 - In the Wine Cellar with Jim Caron

In this episode of Wine and Dime, I will be talking to the Jim Caron.  Jim is a Cellar Master at Bully Hill Vineyards, located in Hammondsport, NY, overlooking Keuka Lake.   We talk about the wines, and how the wine industry impacts the local economy.  We hope you enjoy this episode.  You can find out more about Bully Hill by checking out their website at https://www.bullyhillvineyards.com/

The Wine:

Old Mischief:  A masterful Red Blend, with ripe flavors of raspberry and plum; accented by hints of spice.

Cabernet Franc:  Bully Hill makes a downright tasty Cab Franc with the grapes being sourced from Seneca Lake.  The current 2013 vintage was fermented in Redwood open top fermenters for maximum tannin and color extraction.  Once finished and pressed off, we fill up oak casks down in the cellar to bring this fine wine to fruition.   We do small lot production of 500 cases a year and thanks to our happy herd of customers this wine sells out annually!

Gewürztraminer: is a variety with a pink to red skin colour, which makes it a "white wine grape" as opposed to the blue to black-skinned varieties commonly referred to as "red wine grapes". The variety has high natural sugar and the wines are white and usually off-dry, with a flamboyant bouquet of lychees. Indeed, Gewürztraminer and lychees share the same aroma compounds.[1] Dry Gewürztraminers may also have aromas of roses, passion fruit and floral notes. It is not uncommon to notice some spritz

Wine and Dime Episode 5 - Financial Fitness with Mark Struthers

In this episode of Wine and Dime I will be chatting with Mark Struthers.  Mark is a Gen X father that loves using his 14 years of experience, his education, and the freedom to act as a fiduciary to help families build and preserve wealth. He specializes in planning for and paying for college, while still helping families succeed.

The Wine:

Pinot Noir by Lakewood Vineyards:  A classic garnet color suggests the feminine elegance and youth of this wine. Aromas of cherry, plum and toast precede a medium weight palate with a sturdy tannic backbone, finishing warm with hints of stonefruit and wood. Perfect with salmon, duck, and lamb.  http://lakewoodvineyards.com/pinot-noir/

Malbec from South America:

Malbec is a purple grape variety used in making red wine. The grapes tend to have an inky dark color and robust tannins, and are known as one of the six grapes allowed in the blend of red Bordeaux wine. The French plantations of Malbec are now found primarily in Cahors in South West France. It is increasingly celebrated as an Argentine varietal wine and is being grown around the world.

Wine and Dime Episode 3 - Dentists need Financial Planners Too

In this edition of “Wine and Dime”, we will be talking to Brian Hanks.  Brian is an MBA and CFP, and currently lives in Idaho.  After earning his undergraduate degree in business from Brigham Young University, Brian worked in several companies including Cain, Watters and Associates where he first learned how fun working with Dentists could be.

He earned his MBA from the University of Michigan and worked on Wall Street for Goldman Sachs, and Bank of America. He left the world of corporate advisory because he did not like all the conflicts of interest inherent in their business models.

Brian is thrilled to be working for as an independent, fee-only advisor serving the dental community with tax, accounting/bookkeeping, financial planning and investment services. He specializes in helping newer dentists buy dental practices.

This Episodes wine choice is Lemberger by Lakewood Vineyards.   This wine has great intensity of flavor. Notes of black raspberries and white pepper highlight a toasty bouquet. Finishing dry with flavors of raspberry and hints of spice. Try this with red meat (terrific with prime rib), and earthy dishes like grilled Portobello mushrooms.
