Investing Mailbag

In this episode of Wine and Dime we will be reaching into the mailbag to answer your questions about Investing!

These were some questions that we've been hearing and since this month has been all about investing, we figured we'd take this opportunity to answer them.

If you have any questions that you would like answered on the show, don't hesitate to contact us. We would love to hear from you!

As often happens with a winery, someone starts with a dream, and for James and Elizabeth Prejean that dream began in California. Jim was born in Carencro, LA and ended up in California the hard way, wounded in a hospital. The USS Cushing, his previous home, was sunk in WWII in the Battle of Guadalcanal and he was severely wounded. After college, he began his career in labor relations. Jim and Elizabeth met on an airplane where Elizabeth worked as a flight attendant and Jim was traveling on business. They married not long after and lived in San Francisco. The short ride from San Francisco to wine country kindled the dream. Jim’s career with American Can took them far away from wine country and brought them eventually to Connecticut in 1974. Jim discovered the Finger Lakes wine industry during business trips to the Finger Lakes and the dream was rekindled. Jim and Elizabeth decided to “retire” to a winery. In 1978, they purchased 53 acres and planted the first 13 in 1979. Traveling from Connecticut on the weekends, they worked the farm for 6 years until, in 1985 they took up permanent residence and built the winery. Prejean winery opened officially in 1986. Sadly, Jim died suddenly in 1989, but he was fortunate enough to see his dream realized. He was quite proud of their accomplishments, and even though he only lived for three years after the winery’s opening, he touched many people. Tom, his wife Amy and Elizabeth and our friendly, knowledgeable tasting room staff are running the winery now and, hopefully, maintaining Jim Prejean’s passion.

Grenache-wine-tasting-WineFolly.jpg

Grenache Wines

Grenache (Garnacha) is a red-wine grape grown extensively in France, Spain, Australia and the United States. It is particularly versatile both in the vineyard and the winery, which may explain why it is one of the most widely distributed grapes in the world.

Grenache is the French (and most internationally recognized) name for the grape, but it has a number of synonyms. In Spain, where it is one of the country's flagship varieties, it is known as Garnacha, and on the island of Sardinia it has been known for centuries as Cannonau. Some believe that the grape originated in Sardinia, and was taken back to Spain by the Aragonese, who occupied the island in the 14th Century.

In France, Grenache is most widely planted in the southern Rhone Valley and throughout both Provence and Languedoc-Roussillon. It is most commonly found alongside Syrah and Mourvedre in the classic Southern Rhone Blend (notably in Cotes du Rhone wines), and is the main grape variety in Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

Grenache's versatility provides winemakers with all sorts of possibilities. Grenache-based rosé is one of southern France's signature wine styles. The variety is common in Cotes de Provence wines along with Cinsaut and Mourvedre, and the finest examples come from the towns of Tavel and Lirac. Near the border with Spain, Grenache is behind the sweet wines of Banyuls.

Investing 101

Welcome to this edition of Wine and Dime with Amy Irvine. Today, we're not actually having a guest speaker, but we are discussing a topic that has been brought up by some of the listeners. And that is, "what's the difference between active and passive income?"

But before we get into that, we're going to talk about the topic of the month, which is investment.

This month, we're going to dive pretty deeply into, various topics around investing for now, and for lack of a better term, your future. This is the area that people think that financial planning is actually made or not made and in our opinion, investments are a tool that help you reach your goals.

So sit on back, pop open your favorite beverage and enjoy the show.

Get The Port Out - It's Tax Time

Hey Wine and Dime Listeners! It's tax time, and maybe, like me, it's time to go pour a Port and sip away while we work through all this. I know this isn't the greatest topic for some, but, I've come prepared with some jokes to help lighten the mood. Now we all know there are two certainties in life, death and taxes, and we would love to avoid them both! But if we have to pay taxes, we don't want to pay a penny more than we have to, and that is the gist of what we'll be talking about in this episode! So grab your favorite beverage and enjoy the show. And while you're here, don't forget to Rate, Like, Subscribe, and Share!

Financial Lessons We Can Learn by Watching Movies with Steve Juetten

Welcome back to another episode of Wine and Dime! In this episode I chat with Steve Juetten. And if you recognize the last name, it’s because I’ve had his wife Nancy on a few times. Steve is a fellow financial planner who likes to use life experiences to relate to financial planning. Just like Amy can bring anything back to a vineyard, Steve can bring financial lessons from movies, TV shows and pop culture. This was a very fun episode and I think you will learn a lot!

Steve Juetten

Juetten Financial Planning

If you’re looking for someone to help you take care of your money matters so you can do more of what you love,  perhaps I’m that person.

“Trust” is a big deal with my clients. Trust is made up of two parts — competence and character and that’s how I earn my clients’ trust. By being competent at what I do (I hold CFP® designation and it’s the highest designation in our profession and the hardest to earn) and by acting in good character by always keeping your interests and needs first. In legal terms, I act as a “fiduciary” — meaning I’m legally bound to put your interests first. Not all financial advisers are willing to do that, but I am.

Since 2002, individuals and couples have been coming to me to help them make sound financial decisions so they can do more of what they love. My business is founded on the belief that good financial planning does not have to be confusing, complex or scary. I came to this belief after consulting for more than 25 years with large corporations and their employees to help them understand and use their employer benefits.

My passion for financial planning and investing took root while I was still in high school. I have always enjoyed organizing financial data and learning about financial markets. Now I apply those passions to help my clients identify and make their financial dreams come true.

I am a photographer, movie buff, exerciser, reader and life-long learner with a wall of “how-to” books about a wide range of subjects. Married to Nancy since 1987, we welcomed our son Kyle to the family in 1997. Champion, our vibrant and energetic cockapoo, joined us in 2011. Together, we enjoy today, save for tomorrow, and express gratitude for the good fortune we have to do work we love that serves others in ways that make a lasting difference in their lives.

The best way to get in touch with Steve is either to call him at 425-829-5953 or send him an email at steve@finpath.com. His company website is www. finpath.com.

LA MARCA PROSECCO D.O.C.

La Marca Prosecco elevates the everyday with a crisp, refreshing style and a delicate, floral palate. Made from the expressive Glera grape — found in the hillside vineyards of Italy’s Prosecco capital, Treviso — La Marca Prosecco is an elegant, luxurious sparkling wine that pairs beautifully with a variety of foods.

Our delicate La Marca Prosecco has a pale, golden straw color and sparkles with lively effervescence. Opening with aromas of fresh-picked citrus and honeysuckle blossoms, the crisp, clean palate brings fruity flavors of green apple, juicy peach and ripe lemon, framed by hints of minerality. The finish is light and refreshing with a tantalizing hint of sweetness.
