Live with Plum founder Justine Chan

Welcome to this edition of Wine and Dime with Amy Irvine.  I'm thrilled to have another woman who is involved with finance on the show today but in a different way. Justine Chan is going to be talking to us about a new website that she's created called “Live With Plum”.

She was a first-time home buyer, she muddled through the process and she loved learning more and more about it.  Five years, four apartments and one license later, she's much more knowledgeable and here to share her knowledge with you. We hope you enjoy the show, so, sit on back, sip your favorite beverage and enjoy!

Justine Chan

It all started in 2014, when I bought my first apartment in New York City. I was 25 and eager to lay down some roots but felt utterly confused by the convoluted process of buying a home.

To begin, I met with multiple real estate agents and ultimately ended up using one (whom I liked by the way!) but I barely knew this person so why would I blindly entrust him with such a big and important purchase? And so, I embarked on a personal education campaign…

I searched online endlessly but the information was fragmented, contradictory and oftentimes trying to sell me a mortgage product I didn’t need yet. I then tried buying books, thinking that the information would at least have credibility, and while more helpful than online listicles, the books were not updated as frequently as needed in today’s rapidly changing real estate landscape.

Eventually, I did find and buy a teeny tiny 350 sqft studio apartment I loved… but frankly, I abhorred the process of getting there. It felt like I researched and had more control over my skincare regime than I did with my first home purchase!

Fast forward 5 years later, I go on to purchase 3 more apartment units in the NY/NJ area and earn my real estate license while working full-time. Now, I want to use my experience and knowledge to help and empower other women towards achieving their homebuying dreams.

Exploring What It's Like to be a Woman with Jodi Flynn

Welcome to this edition of Wine & Dime with Amy Irvine. I'm thrilled to have Jodi Flynn as our guest today. Jodi is the author of the book, “Accomplished: How to go From Dreaming To Doing.” She runs a podcast called “Women Taking The Lead,” and she's a coach and her company is called Women Taking The Lead.

I think you're gonna just enjoy the conversation that the two of us have around insecurities, around self-doubt, around ways that we can get together and talk about and overcome those items. She works with a lot of women like me who are Type A and have gotten so wrapped up in what they're doing and accomplishing that they don't know who they are anymore.

We hope you enjoy this edition of another strong woman for women's history month. Where we explore what it's like to be a woman, enjoy privileges that we now have, thank those that have come before us, and get to stand on their shoulders.

Sit back, sip your favorite glass of wine and enjoy this episode with Jody Flynn.

I help my driven, high performing clients achieve their biggest goals with ease by identifying and overcoming the obstacles that are getting in their way. I LOVE working with my clients.  I’ve been coaching long enough to know who my ideal clients are and because of that, when we work together, we both get energized.

I specialize in working with Type A women because I am one myself. If you aren’t sure if you’re Type A listen to these two episodes of Women Taking the Lead (if you are Type A you’re going to gasp and laugh along with me):

Are You This Woman?

Decoding What It Means to Be Type A

Being a Psychology major in college gave me the human insight needed as an executive in mutual fund operations; I found I flourished in the areas of supervising, mentoring, project management and team building.

There I discovered my personal mission – to listen for, bring out and nurture other’s strengths so they could use them to their advantage. In 2010, I seized the opportunity to train as a Professional Coach through the Institute of Professional Excellence in Coaching (iPEC).

Taking pride in ‘walking my talk’, I take on challenges that push me outside of my own comfort zone – from following my passion for a career that moved me away from my family and friends to a new state, running a marathon, starting a business, launching the Women Taking the Lead Podcast and writing a book.

I feel the same fear others do when “putting myself out there” but I know that is the path to living full-out, and I love to encourage others to overcome their fears and do the same.

Today, as the Founder of Women Taking the Lead, I coach, facilitate workshops, host the Women Taking the Lead podcast and lead a thriving community of women in leadership. I am also the President of the Board for The Maine Women’s Conference and a member of Business Networking International (BNI).

Why Amy Thinks The Economy Will Recover

Hey Wine and Dime listeners this episode is a bit different. This past week was full of both fiscal and monetary economic policy efforts to assist our economy during these unique circumstances. On Thursday night, we participated in a live Wine and Dime Virtual session that explained the actions of both federal reserve and the government, and why I think the economy will recover in time. We wish you all health and safety and hope you get to kick back with your favorite "wine" and listen or watch the show.

This was Wine and Dime virtual event that I had with some friends, family and clients about the state of the economy during this pandemic and why I think it ...

Every week it's my goal to share a story of someone's journey through their life and financial vineyard. We take you from their roots, to the journey of their vines and the influences in the air that have helped craft their delicious lives. Like wine, life and finances have different palettes, that should be celebrated and not judged.

Welcome to this edition of Wine and Dime. We are going to be talking to Janice once again about how women, empowerment and the two come together. We really spent a lot of time talking about, almost a identity crisis for many women who have worked their way into a leadership position.

So sit on back, and enjoy your favorite beverage with Janice Vital and Amy Irvine.

Another Awesome Tip From Patty Hamilton Rodgers

Every week it's my goal to share a story of someone's journey through their life and financial vineyard. We take you from their roots, to the journey of their vines, and the influences in the air that helped craft their delicious lives. Like wine, life and finances have different palettes that should be celebrated and not judged.

We hope that you enjoy today's show with Patty Hamilton Rogers, who is a blast from the past and then some. Patty is at the core of my vineyard formation and you're gonna hear some of the ways that she, as a another woman, really helped influence the creation of my vineyard.

As we continue to celebrate women's history month, you're also gonna hear a few tips in there about why it's so important to get out and vote, some of the changes that Patty went through as she was developing her vineyard, and some of the exploration that she's gone on and figuring out exactly who she is today.

So we encourage you to sit on back drink your favorite wine, there were certainly a few good ones mentioned in this podcast, and enjoy the show!

Patty’s Wine Pick - Josh Cellars Winery

josh-cellars-home-page-og.jpg

“In 2005, I was in the wine cellar with a friend, someone who happened to be a 3rd generation Sonoma grape grower. We were tinkering around with a new wine that we sourced from a rugged volcanic vineyard in the Red Hills of Lake County California. We were reminiscing about our fathers, and it reminded me of how my Dad used to tinker around the garage, rebuilding old stock cars with his friends.

That rich, approachable wine that we tried back then defines the style and quality that we try to replicate each vintage at Josh Cellars, wines that are bold and expressive, but unassuming and approachable. Funny how it reminds me of someone.

Amy’s Wine Pick Lakewood Vineyard

Lakewood Farm is located on the west side of Seneca Lake, with east-facing slopes gently leading down to the shores. Owned and operated by the Stamp family since 1951, the vineyard’s first grapes were sold to Welch's Grape Juice Company in 1955.  As the economic climate for small commercial grape producers became challenging, the Stamps took the next step and began producing and selling wine made from their grapes.

As the wines produced at Lakewood Vineyards gained recognition, so did the acreage in grapes increase—from 45 in 1988 to 80 in production today, with 10 newly planted. Lakewood Farm is still the main source of grapes for Lakewood Vineyards wines and supplies 15 varieties.

Looking Forward

The vineyard crew practices careful management of the vines and land, with a focus on sustainable practices, including composting, mulching and use of cover crops.

Other positions have included being a successful realtor, a national sales trainer and a securities broker.  Today she serves clients in her financial practice and leads Inspired Women Inc.

After introducing the Guide to Overcoming Adversity, Galbraith applies the principles to relevant case studies of working women. Galbraith highlights women who faced challenges ranging from health, finances, relationships, career issues and circumstances.

We are welcome alongside these women to experience not just their crisis, but more important, how the women used the Lemon Crushing principles to succeed.

The Guide to Overcoming Adversity including the Case Studies of Real Women with Real Problems who experienced Real Success, give us all hope and inspiration to face our own “lemons” and “make lemonade”

caymus-conundrum-red-blend_1.jpg

Conundrum Red Wine Blend Created from dark red varietals, this wine is both lighthearted and serious. It continues to take inspiration from my late grandpa, Charlie Wagner Sr .. who taught me to find the fun in wine making and to be willing to take risks. He also set an example for moving the bar higher as we continually strive to make better and better wines.

Like our other Conundrum offerings, Conundrum Red is sourced from premier wine growing regions in California, featuring Petite Sirah, Zinfandel and Cabernet Sauvignon. It is a wine of structure. richness and complexity that is also down-to-earth, smooth and approachable. Just as it opens up new possibilities for wine making, Conundrum Red creates endless options for food pairings. It is a perfect complement to richly flavored or spicy foods like spaghetti Bolognese: Asian or Indian cuisine; Mexican tacos or fajitas: smoked meats: and of course. BBQ (meaning pretty much anything that fits on a grill).

We recommend drinking Conundrum Red slightly chilled - this not only enhances the fruit profile and structure of the wine. but makes it a great choice any time of year. You may just discover another reason to believe in the rewards of going off the beaten path and embracing the chance to try something new.

Tasting Notes: A playful purple hue. this vintage opens on the nose with the pure essence of chocolate mixed with notes of berry pie, wildflowers. vanilla and a fresh oak character. The palate is lively and mouthwatering, featuring lush cherry flavors infused with unsweetened chocolate and intriguing notes of clove and nutmeg. Tannins provide structure and vibrancy from the moment of entry all the way through to the finish, enhancing this wine's freshness and calling you back long after you take an initial sip.

The Spark That Leads to an Entrepreneur with Lauren Zangardi Haynes

Episode 100…. 100 episodes, I can’t believe it!! When I first started Wine and Dime, I didn’t know how long it would last. And now that I’ve been doing it for a couple of years, I don’t know what I’d do without it! I’ve had incredible guests and great talks, and of course, great wine along the way. Thank you for all of your support over these 100 episodes, and here’s to 100 more! à votre santé!

In this episode of Wine and Dime I chat with someone I have a lot in common with, Lauren Zangardi Haynes. Lauren is the owner if Spark Financial Advisors. Lauren and I talk about starting our own female owned Fee Only Financial Planning Practice, where we are both passionate about helping our clients in any way that we can. We talk about some of the struggles along the way, and how we overcame those struggles to build a thriving business. I think this episode really shows the entrepreneurial spirit that is within us, and showcases the spirit that drives her.

Lauren Zangardi Haynes

With over 14 years in the financial services industry working for U.S. Trust (Bank of America’s Private Bank) and as a Fee-Only financial planner I’ve fielded a lot of questions. My favorite is, “How do I know I’m doing the right thing with my money?”

I get it. Most of us weren’t taught about personal finance in school or at home. Yet now you find yourself responsible for managing your financial future and frankly, it’s a little bewildering.

Building strategies for myself (and now for my clients) gives me the certainty I need to make crucial decisions about saving for retirement and college, reducing our taxes, and knowing where and how to invest our money.

The best part of my job is getting to know what my clients cherish, collaboratively building a solid financial plan that supports your best life, and seeing it put into place. It is truly an honor to walk with my clients on their financial journey.

What’s your big dream?

Let’s talk about how to get there.

Epic Reserve is a rich blend of Finger Lakes Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot.  While fermenting, we "rack and return" the wines -- called délestage in French -- to increase oxygenation and improve extraction of color, flavor and tannin.  The result is a wine of distinction and depth with ripe berry notes that pairs beautifully with juicy meats like steaks, pork roasts or chops, pasta with white or red sauces, and other hearty dishes.  Serve at cool room temperature (60-65 F).  Bring a bottle to dinner with friends!
